The religious significance of Mahashivratri is very high in Hinduism. It is celebrated on the day of Krishna Chaturdashi of Falgun month. According to Shivpuran, on this day Lord Shiva came from formless to real form and appeared in the form of Shivling at midnight. He came in the form of a huge fire pillar (Jyotirlinga), which had no beginning and end. Lord Brahma and Vishnu tried to understand it, but they failed. Then Shivji told that he is the master of this infinite power. Therefore this day is celebrated in the joy of his appearance. Therefore the night of Mahashivratri is considered very important.

Marriage of Shiva and Parvati

At the same time, according to Shivpuran, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were married on the day of Mahashivratri. Mother Parvati did rigorous penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Pleased with her devotion, Shivji married her on Krishna Chaturdashi of Falgun month. Therefore, this day is also celebrated as the union of Shiva and Shakti.

By worshipping Lord Shiva on this day, a person's most difficult tasks are accomplished and by the grace of Lord Shiva, one attains happiness and peace. On this day, the Lord is worshipped in all four prahars, in which Nisha Puja has special significance.

Kashi is the only city where Chaturdash Lingas are worshipped.

By worshipping Lord Shiva on the day of Mahashivratri, all the sins of a person are destroyed and he attains salvation. Fasting and night vigil also have great significance on this day. Many devotees anoint Lord Shiva with milk, curd, honey, Gangajal and Bilva leaves etc. on this day.

The festival of Mahashivratri is a very auspicious occasion to express our devotion and reverence towards Lord Shiva. It also reminds us that Lord Shiva is always with us and we should always be ready to receive his blessings.

On this day, puja, abhishek, chanting of Mahamrityunjaya mantra, worship of Lord Parthiv and Bilva Sahasrarchan are done. This festival dedicated to Lord Shiva is very important.
