Amavasya Tarpan
Amavasya Tithi is dedicated to ancestors, therefore on this day it is customary to perform tarpan for ancestors. On Amavasya day, water, sesame, barley, kusha and flowers etc. will be offered to ancestors.
Method of Tarpan:
First of all, become pure by taking bath etc.
Then meditate on your ancestors.
Take water, sesame, barley, durva, and white flowers in a copper vessel.
Slowly release that water on the earth by invoking ancestors with the thumb and index finger of your right hand.
While performing tarpan, keep your face in the south direction.
At the time of tarpan, Pandit ji will give water mixed with sesame to your ancestors by reciting mantras.
Special:
Pinddaan is also performed for ancestors on Amavasya day.
If you cannot go to Gaya and perform tarpan, then you can perform tarpan at home on the banks of a holy river or reservoir.
If you do not have a river or reservoir near you, then you can perform tarpan at a quiet place at home.
