Vishnupad Temple in Gaya is a sacred and ancient Hindu temple situated on the banks of the Falgu River. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is built around the sacred Dharmashila — a holy rock that bears a 40-centimeter footprint believed to be that of Lord Vishnu. It is said that at this very spot, Lord Vishnu subdued the demon Gayasura centuries ago.
This magnificent octagonal temple was reconstructed in 1787 by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar. The temple features impressive granite architecture, intricately carved pillars, and a golden flag atop its towering spire.
Vishnupad Temple is considered one of the most revered sites for performing Pind Daan, Tarpan, and Shraddha rituals, especially during the Pitru Paksha period. It is believed that rituals performed here bring peace to ancestral souls and grant them moksha (liberation).

Perform the sacred ritual of Pitru Moksha with devotion
Gaya Ji is named after a demon named Gayasur, who had attained special powers through severe penance. For the welfare of the people, Lord Vishnu placed his foot on Gayasur and granted him salvation. It is believed that where the Lord's foot fell, the Vishnupad temple was established, and Gayasur's body turned into the mountain ranges of Gaya. That is why Gaya is called Pitru Moksha Tirtha.

🧘♂️ Purpose of Pind Daan:
Pind Daan is performed for the peace of the departed soul and for the departure of the Pitrulok. This karma is performed on the date of the deceased person, or especially in Pitru Paksha. Pind Daan performed with devotion and a calm mind ensures the grace and blessings of the ancestors.

Pind Daan
– Make a pind with rice, ghee, honey, milk, curd and sesame seeds and offer it to the ancestors.
Tarpan

Brahmin Food and Donation
– Feed a Brahmin and offer clothes and dakshina.
