Vishnupad Temple in Gaya is a sacred and ancient Hindu temple situated on the banks of the Falgu River. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is built around the sacred Dharmashila — a holy rock that bears a 40-centimeter footprint believed to be that of Lord Vishnu. It is said that at this very spot, Lord Vishnu subdued the demon Gayasura centuries ago.
This magnificent octagonal temple was reconstructed in 1787 by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar. The temple features impressive granite architecture, intricately carved pillars, and a golden flag atop its towering spire.
Vishnupad Temple is considered one of the most revered sites for performing Pind Daan, Tarpan, and Shraddha rituals, especially during the Pitru Paksha period. It is believed that rituals performed here bring peace to ancestral souls and grant them moksha (liberation).
Vishnupad Temple in Gaya, Bihar, is an extremely sacred and ancient Hindu temple situated on the banks of the Falgu River. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is renowned for the sacred Dharmashila (the footprint of Lord Vishnu), believed to be approximately 40 cm long. This holy footprint is installed inside the sanctum and enclosed within a silver covering.
According to the Puranas, a demon named Gayasura became immensely powerful through intense penance. Lord Vishnu asked him to allow a sacred yajna to be performed upon his body. Eventually, Lord Vishnu subdued and pushed him beneath the earth. At that very spot, the divine footprint of Lord Vishnu was imprinted on the sacred rock, which is now worshipped at Vishnupad Temple.
Devotees believe that performing Pind Daan, Tarpan, and Shraddha rituals here grants peace, liberation (moksha), and satisfaction to ancestral souls. For this reason, Gaya is considered one of the most important moksha-dham (liberation pilgrimage sites) in Hinduism.
The Vishnupad Temple is constructed from massive granite stones. Its octagonal (eight-sided) structure rises approximately 100 feet high, surrounded by beautifully carved pillars. At the top stands a golden flag and kalash, weighing around 50 kilograms, symbolizing divine glory.
Inside the sanctum, the sacred footprint of Lord Vishnu is enclosed in a silver frame. Opposite the footprint, an idol of Goddess Lakshmi is also installed, and daily worship and adornment rituals are performed with devotion.
The temple is a central site for Pind Daan and ancestral Shraddha rituals. Devotees perform Tarpan, Pind offerings, Brahmin feeding, and Shraddha ceremonies on the banks of the Falgu River — especially during Pitru Paksha, when millions of devotees visit Gaya for ancestral rites.
During Pitru Paksha and Amavasya, special rituals and elaborate ceremonies are organized at Vishnupad Temple. Devotees perform Pind Daan and Tarpan with complete Vedic procedures.
